Pre-Selection and Judging Procedures
Pre-Selection Panel
- Each year the Organisers will appoint a Pre-Selection panel to review entries.
- The Panel will initially review and assess all submissions received, and will decide which works will be invited to exhibit at the Art Show.
- The Show Judge/s may or may not be part of the Pre-Selection panel.
- All decisions on acceptances are final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
- Artists will be notified which of their works have been accepted to be exhibited prior to the opening of the Show.
Pre-Selection Process
The selection panel are expected to take into account:
- Artistic merit.
- Anticipated likelihood that the work will sell in the show. Factors such as whether the artist is selling well elsewhere, has sold at our show previously and expected visitor demographic are taken into account.
- Whether the work will enhance and complement the standard of the show.
Some artists might not have completed their artwork prior to the closing date for entry. It is important to note that lack of a photograph does not in and of itself preclude acceptance. Members of the selection panel have the ability to look at all other works of the entrant in their Gallery 247 portfolio, and can therefore make a value judgement based on previous work, even where the artist is otherwise unknown.
There is a joint review sitting during which all provisionally accepted works are reviewed at a meeting of all panel members. Factors that are taken into account at that time include:
- Provisional acceptances that are in breach of Terms and Conditions. Typically these are entries over the maximum number permitted, entries that are too large and the like.
- Achieving sufficient diversity of works on display in size, medium, subject matter, genre and price.
- Avoiding a preponderance of a particular subject, size, style.
Given that we guarantee to display all accepted works, it is important that the final acceptances do not exceed the capacity of the venue or compromise the overall presentation of the show. Accordingly some works might be rejected simply because there’s not enough room.
For those artists who are accepted, congratulations – we wish you every success in the show.
Show Judging
- Each year the Organisers appoint an external Art Show Judge/s for the Show.
- Judging takes place after the Art Show installation is complete and prior to the Gala Opening.
- All accepted artwork will be considered for judging for prizes and awards.
- Each artwork is only eligible to win one award.
- All awards are non-acquisitive.
- The Organisers’ and Judges' decisions are final.
